Since 2017, thanks to UBS, the shiny letters forming the word “Locarno” greet the audience in Piazza Grande. It’s a symbolic, impactful installation: up close it’s “just” a letter, from afar it’s Locarno.

There are many ways to win over the Piazza Grande crowd. Fredi M. Murer, who received the 2019 Pardo alla carriera, did it like this, with a magic trick in front of 8000 people, not unlike his films.

There’s auteur cinema, with its signatures. Some of them are in gold sharpie, every night on the red carpet, looking the Festival in the eye. They’re the signatures of the Locarno Film Festival’s Wall of Fame.
